It might be little embarrassing to show off your skin if you have psoriasis.
You might not able to always pretend to be comfortable all the time when you wear clothes that cover your entire body and often stick to it.
Psoriasis can affect you both mentally and physically and you might not be that comfortable to talk about this to people as they might be opinionated about the condition.
So, What Is Psoriasis?
It is a non-contagious, chronic skin condition caused by a hyperactive immune system. The skin cells multiply 10 times faster than the normal rate in this condition. As the cells under the skin reach the skin’s surface they die, this causes raised, red plaques covered with white scales.
Which Parts Does It Affect?
It occurs on knees, elbow, scalp and also on the torso, palms, and sole of the feet.
What Are The Types Of Psoriasis?
There are five types of psoriasis
Plaque psoriasis: It is the most common form of psoriasis. They are red patches which are raised covered with a silvery white layer of dead skin cells. It appears on scalp, knees, elbows and lowers back which are itchy and painful, and sometimes they crack and bleed.
Guttate psoriasis: It is a type of psoriasis that starts at a very early stage say childhood. It appears in small, red, separate spots on the skin. They appear on trunk and limbs.
Inverse psoriasis: It is smooth, shiny, red lesions that appear in body folds. It basically appears on the armpit, groin, under the breasts and other body folds.
Pustular psoriasis: It appears as white pustules surrounded by red skin. It is basically seen in adults on their hands and feet.
Erythrodermic psoriasis: It is an inflammatory form of psoriasis that often affects most of the body surface. The skin appears to be fiery red and exfoliated. Severe itching and pain are its symptoms. This form of psoriasis can be life-threatening if not consulted with a doctor immediately.
What Are Its Symptoms?
If you have psoriasis the signs and symptoms include:
Scaly skin on scalp, knees, upper body and elbows
Dry, cracked skin that might bleed
The patches are very itchy, burnings and sore
Plaques of skin that is raised, red or pink in colour with white scales on it.
If psoriasis affects your fingernails or toenails the nails become hard, pitted, and discoloured.
Stiffness, tenderness, and pain in the joints
When Should You See A Doctor?
If you think you have a few symptoms mentioned above, you might have psoriasis. In that case, you should consult a doctor immediately.
You can book an appointment with our dermatologists at Sankhya hospitals to help you out.
What Are The Causes?
The exact cause is yet to be known, but psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder which indicates there is a systematic error inside your body with the T cells and white blood cells. They basically defend your body against foreign substances but in psoriasis, T cells attack healthy cells and this due to the condition and the process continues.
The other possible psoriasis triggers are infection of the skin, injury, stress, smoking, family history, alcohol consumption and vitamin D deficiency.
How Can This Be Treated And Cured?
There are many effective treatment options for psoriasis. It is treated according to the type, severity and amount of skin involved and affected by the condition.
In a mild case, it can be treated with creams, lotions, sprays, and occasionally small injections of steroids.
Severe conditions may require ultraviolet light treatment or systemic medicines like pills or injections. Many products available in the market can also treat psoriases, such as vitamins and other medications. While a healthy diet and stress management is good for your whole body is the best cure for psoriasis and preventive measure as well.
