Problems with development of hip during childhood
What are the types of hip replacement surgery?
There are three types of hip replacement surgery
Total hip replacement
In this surgery, a part of your thigh bone and the ball of the hip is replaced with an artificial ball. The replacement parts can be plastic, metal or ceramic, which is used in different combinations.
Metal-on-plastic is the most widely used one
Ceramic-on-plastic or Ceramic-on ceramic is used more often in younger ones
Metal-on-metal is used more occasionally in younger ones.
The total hip replacement surgery has two types of approaches
Posterior approach: In this approach, the surgeon makes an incision along the outer buttock. Then head of the femur bone is removed and replaced with a metal stem, which acts as the new head of the femur. Then the acetabulum of the hip joint is removed and replaced with a new metal socket. A spacer made of plastic or metal or ceramic is placed between these two parts to decrease friction within the hip joint
Anterior approach: In this approach the surgeon makes an incision on the front part of the upper thigh and the rest of the procedure as in the posterior approach follows.
Partial Hip Replacement Surgery
In this surgery, only the ball of the joint is removed and replaced. The socket remains the same. This surgery is done in cases of hip fracture.
Hip Preservation Surgery/Hip Arthroscopy
Hip arthroscopy is performed when the hip joint damage does not require a hip replacement.
During hip arthroscopy, a camera is inserted into the hip joint through a small incision to identify the problem. Then other instruments are inserted into the hip through small incisions to correct the problem. This procedure is less invasive than total hip replacements and lead to quicker recovery.
