What Are The Treatments For Shoulder Pain?

Initially shoulder pain is treated with RICE.

  • Rest for two days
  • Ice the injured area
  • Compress the painful area
  • Elevate the shoulders with the pillows

Slings are used to keep an injured shoulder in place. The doctors would recommend non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSA-IDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen or an injection of corticosteroid drugs to reduce pain and swelling. When tears are severe, surgery is recommended.

Depending on the patient’s condition minimally invasive shoulder replacement surgeries can be performed. The types of include

  • Hemi-arthroplasty for fractures. The arm bone or the ball in the shoulder is replaced.
  • Total shoulder arthroplasty for arthritis where both the arm bone and the shoulder socket are replaced.
  • Reverse shoulder arthroplasty for large rotator cuff tears where the ball is replaced with a socket and the socket is replaced with a ball.
